Strong Odor Clears Out Franchise Tax Board Building

SACRAMENTO (CBS13) -- An envelope sent to the Franchise Tax Board in Sacramento that made some workers sick turned out not to be serious.

Hazmat crews say the chemical the workers smelled was a cleaning solution. The building was cleared at about 11:30 a.m. and several workers were evaluated after complaining of dizziness and headaches, but workers were cleared to go back into the building at about 1:15 p.m.

It appears that a cleaning solution spilled on some tax returns mailed in to the board from out of the country, according to Sacramento Metropolitan Fire Assistant Chief Scott Cockrum.

Cockrum said his department makes frequent visits to the Franchise Tax Board because of the volume of mail the building at 9646 Butterfield Way receives.
