Oakland Cops Make 32 Arrests During Occupy Raid

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) — Oakland police made 32 arrests during a predawn raid of an anti-Wall Street protest encampment in the city hall plaza.

Police Chief Howard Jordan says the operation to break up the camp Monday went peacefully, with no reported injury to officers or protesters.

At a news conference, officials said the Occupy Oakland raid is costing the city $300,000 to $500,000 for bringing in officers from other agencies to help.

Officials decided to end the encampment because of the growing strain on city resources and recent incidents of violence. Mayor Jean Quan noted that 179 calls to 911 had to go unanswered during a recent Occupy demonstration.

Jordan says there will continue to be a strong police presence at the plaza around the clock to make sure protesters don't reestablish a camp.
