Pelican Bay Still Locked Down After Prison Riot

CRESCENT CITY, Calif. (AP) — Pelican Bay prisoners remain on lockdown after a riot broke out over the weekend, involving 63 inmates and injuring three.

Prison spokesman Lt. Christopher Acosta says the Sunday morning brawl happened in the prison's general population yard. He says the riot lasted about eight minutes and included the firing of a warning shot.

Acosta says three inmates were taken to a nearby hospital, where they were treated and released. They returned to their cells the same day.

Acosta says the prisoners involved were still on lockdown Thursday as officials investigated the cause of the riot.

According to The Daily Triplicate of Crescent City, Pelican Bay's last riot was in April 2009, involving 23 inmates.
