UPDATE: Church Uses Baby Monitor To Help Nab Suspected Copper Thieves

CARMICHAEL (CBS13) Members of a Carmichael church that had been targeted by copper thieves for two nights in a row managed to help nab the suspected thieves when the greedy pair returned for a third night.

Just hours after a report by CBS13’s Tony Lopez on the repeated copper theft at the church aired, the alleged suspects returned to the scene of the crime, but this time, church officials were prepared.

They set up a baby monitor on top of the Carmichael Bible Church at 7100 Fair Oaks Blvd., hooked it up to a monitor and VCR, and took shifts watching it.

Around 4:30 Friday morning, more than six hours into the overnight stakeout, the alleged thieves returned and Pastor Jeff Livingston was watching. He saw the suspects return, alerted other members of the church and called authorities.

Sacramento County Sheriff’s deputies arrived shortly thereafter and arrested the pair, identified Friday as Curtis Darnell, 36, and Howard Sanders, 26.

Detectives are currently trying to determine if the two are responsible for the previous break-ins.

“Like an adrenaline rush, ‘Hey guys come out here, come out here, they’re there,” Pastor Jeff told CBS13. “I believe that justice is served to the wicked. Sometimes we see that and sometimes we don’t. This time we got to be a part of it happening, so it feels good.”

The church is without heat right now because thieves grabbed copper from the heating and cooling system.

The suspects spent the first night preparing for the costly theft by draining the Freon out of the machines and tore out as much copper as they could carry on the second night.

When the thieves left behind tools, church officials were concerned that they may return for a third night and put their plan into place.

The damage will likely add up to more than $50,000.

Sanders and Darnell were each charged with felony counts of vandalism, grand theft and criminal conspiracy.

We are finding a surprising number of these thefts and crimes coming out of the capital city of California. There is importance here, meaning that the impetus foe these crimes is the fact that California’s leftist-led legislature has declared was upon our job creators, murdering our once powerful economy, murdering our people’ hopes and dreams, murdering our children’s futures.

California has a full three percentage points ABOVE the destroyed unemployment levels of the rest of our nation. My former party has destroyed California.

I do NOT support these criminals, but I see why we here in CA are more up against personal destruction than the rest of our nation. MSM is TOTALLY DERELICT in the fact that this #% points above national average unemployment is NEVER told.

  3. Ken Puck says:

With California’s faux justice system, these guys will never serve a day.

  4. JM in San Diego CA says:

It was a colossal blunder to publicize the method used to detect the thieves. I would have said nothing about the baby monitor.

Do we dare presume that current and future copper thieves: (a) do not watch the news (b) would fail to look for (and recognize) the camera (c) be deterred by the possibility they’re being watched?

    Yeah, a blunder.

    Yeah, blunder

  5. garylee123 says:

Find the person that is buying the copper and prosecute them to the fullest. No buyer, no problem.

  6. SJ says:

Glad they caught the greedy fools, did anyone else pickup on the the guy in the video saying “maybe what they did with the camera could help OTHER businesses? To give the impression he views his church as a business? Just kinda stuck me funny.

    1. Probably You says:

Pastors don’t actually earn anything tax free. They pay income tax, social security, etc. just the same as anybody else. Pastors are treated as essentially independent contractors, and are therefore also responsible for the ’employer’ portion of Social Security, etc. Pastors, on average, earn the least for their level of education of any profession in America. A masters of Divinity is roughly equivalent in cost, duration, and academic rigor to a law degree, without the upside potential in income. The only pastors who would be earning 6 figure incomes are ones who are managing entire teams of pastors at mega-churches that employ 20+ people, and in that case would likely still be making less than a secular person doing a similar job in the private sector. Please find someone else to direct your anger at, instead of the victim of a crime.

    2. Keefer Beefer says:

It’s not tax free dork – the pastors, etc., get a W-2 and pay income and payroll taxes.

Try to be factual instead of spewing stupidity.

    3. Sorry Probably You but Pastors are a profession that attracts a high proportion pedophiles and psychopaths just like government service. And then they “earn their living” by guilting manipulable people into tithing them their living.

Pastors in Amerika have given us Adolph Hiltler and FEMAS perverted version of Romans 13 and have destroyed everything that was great about this country in the process. Pastors in today’s Amerika are not worth wiping your feet on.

    4. Lets get the tax thing straight. Many pastors do not pay into the 2% return on investment pyramid scheme called social security and many do. The Amish for God’s sake do not pay into social security. That’s all of them not just the bishops.

Many of the pastors perks are gotten Income tax free as a perk from the church. Some pastors even get a car tax free this way.

The question you really need to ask and the point you all miss is the reason for the income tax and who it goes to. Would it surprise you if it were not the government? Watch The Secret of OZ at Youtube if you care to learn the truth.
The IRS is merely a collection agency for the global elites.

Communists come from the sewer? I guess you are another bright product of government schools….. I doubt if you could define the term and you only spelled it because you had a spell checker.🙂

    5. Pastor Phil says:

I can assure you most of us pastors do not make that kind of money. Most of us barely make it. Also we most certainly pay taxes!

      1. I assume you mean income tax…..

But do you have a clue as to whom or why you pay incomes taxes?

Here is another flick for you if you want to learn….

    6. Seth R says:

Church is VERY much a business….God’s business. Guess you didn’t know that.

    7. Thomas says:

We actually do not know the full context of the questions proceeding the comment, stop judging others and look inside yourself SJ.

    8. bullrider says:

Pastors are not paid ‘tax free’. You have no idea WHAT you are talking about. And they are not paid with YOUR money so it is none of your flipping business.

How much are we paying illegal aliens with our tax money to come here and live totally for free without working? Why don’t you worry about THAT.

    9. John says:

      “Stuck you funny”. That figures…

    10. W Hop says:

The church is a business. There is money managment. But its not the business you are trying to portray. Stop trying to make something of this.

    11. URFULOFIT says:

Be careful SJ….these fanatics will justify doing anything they WANT to you. Once they declare that YOU are going to hell…they believe their loving god says they should enslave, torture, rape and kill you. they’re “doing god’s work”. A very loving god. It’s a great scam, built upon a hoax. They don’t have to take responsibility and explain themselves like the rest of us.

    12. American says:

      SJ:
Saved by Jesus, on a cross, by his blood has he claimed many for his on.

Jesus said in his scripture to his mother (Mary) and human father (Joesph) when they came looking for him, the following words:
Did you NOT Know I must be about doing my fathers business?
His father is Jehovah the only The Living God. His son Jesus the Christ the Only way to the father is through him. Seek you will find, knock and the door will be open.

  7. I think that the policies the Christians support such as building codes, minimum wage, the federal reserve all contribute to people getting this desperate. Be responsible for the government you create Christians! And the effects it has on peoples lives.

    http://thingsyourlocalpaperwillnevertellyou.wordpress.com/2011/11/18/christians-need-to-be-resposible-for-their-actions/

    1. bullrider says:

It’s the policies of the Muslim in the White House which are driving people to steal copper and everything else. This wasn’t going on before Obama and his ‘stimulus’ saved our economy.

The rest of your post is ridiculous. “Christians are responsible for building codes…”?

    2. Alfred Hussein Neuman says:

Bullrider – I was going to slam the comment too, but I checked out his link first. I-wright’s basic point:

Christians have created the government we have through their vote, and more importantly – through their silence.

      1. RLABruce says:

The Christian vote has NEVER been a deciding vote; they are always in the minority in voting. The secular vote has always been the one that decides issues and is the reason for the mess we have now. The Christian vote isn’t silent; it is outnumbered.

  8. walter12 says:

In Montana, we do not have too many successful burglaries or armed robberies, because the perps know that they may be shot dead, while in the act. The 2nd Amendment is alive and well in our state.

    1. Lighthope says:

Sane out here in Eastern Washington. We’re a Right to Carry state. So the criminals know not only will we shoot them, but in our large rural forest area we have a saying: “There are plenty of places to hide a body!”.

    2. Midge Masters says:

What a concept .. actually protecting yourself. loved ones and property without relying on the corrupt, degenerate, criminal government. That’s revolutionary.

  9. Nancy Robinson-Jackson says:

come on people! what the hell is wrong with you right winging tea partiers? don’t you know that these two fine men are entitled to there share of this church’s stuff. where have you been?

    1. In a society based upon government theft and redistribution of wealth you are not far off the mark Nancy.

People learn this behavior by watching government after all.

If this is OK for government why is it not OK for the individual?

After all government gets all of it’s powers from the people so the people must have a right before they can delegate it to the government.

  10. Off Yourselves says:

Those mugshots are exactly what I picture when I hear “copper thieves.”

    1. bullrider says:

I think they should get their jail time (definite and every day served) doubled if they refuse to tell which business has been buying their stolen copper. We need to also crack down on the metal recyclers who ought to know better than to buy stuff from people who have no reason that they ought to be turning in so much.

  11. yarply says:

Bravo. Maybe they should make these people their sheriffs department seeing they evidently had to do the cops job for them.

  12. At The Rubicon says:

I wonder if the EPA will hit the suspects for the standard $25K fine for releasing freon into the atmosphere…

    1. Htos1 says:

No.Only law abiding citizens are convicted of “social” crimes, thanx 1964!

  13. roscoe says:

Do either of these jokers have an air conditioning licence or the epa recycle card..?..If not they violated the clean air act by discharging the freon into the atmosphere…that’s a long time in the federal can, morons !

  14. pdk says:

I’m thinking once convicted of these felonys these two will not be able to vote democrate anymore.

    1. C-IED Guy In Kabul says:

Oh, I’m sure they’ll vote…even if it isn’t them casting the ballot.

  15. Artist Patrick says:

The end is near. Arm yourself for the arrival of armagedden.

  16. andymac says:

Those Rhodes Scholars look like they’ve had a few too many meth encounters. They’re not desperate for anything other than a hot fix.

  17. Renagle says:

My my my. Good on this church for using their God given smarts to help themselves and the police to remove these menaces from the streets in their community. One other note, I could never attend Pastor Livingston’s church as I’d have very impure thoughts during his sermons. haha. Just kidding!
