STOCKTON (CBS13) – A man was shot multiple times while trying to carry out a sting on a suspect who allegedly took a family member’s car stereo, authorities said.

The Modesto Police Department said the victim of a car burglary spotted her stolen stereo on a Craigslist posting and arranged to meet the suspect in a parking lot on the 2700 block of Country Club Boulevard on Friday evening.

The woman and three family members confronted the suspect, who immediately opened fire with a handgun and fled the scene in a car. One of the family members, a 33-year-old man, was hit with five bullets in the torso, authorities said.

The sudden violence sent nearby business employees and shoppers scrambling for cover, according to Kevin Tereb, who was working in a smoke shop close to the gunfire.

“In a parking lot in a safe neighborhood like this, it’s pretty scary, you know?” Tereb said.

Modesto Police Officer Pete Smith said the suspect was not located and is still at large, and the shooting victim was rushed to the hospital where he is in stable condition.

Authorities said it can be helpful for victims to keep an eye on online classifieds to search for stolen goods, but police never recommend that victims confront the suspects on their own.

“You certainly don’t want to insert yourself into this type of volatile and unpredictable situation,” Officer Smith said.

The suspect is described as a Hispanic male in his 20s, weighing about 150 pounds with black hair, and was wearing a black and red 49ers cap and black shirt. The unidentified man fled in a light blue mid-1980s Cadillac.

  • Bad Idea

guess they didn’t think of calling the police……….or getting the license number when he showed up…….

And doesn’t a C.L. listing require a computer? I thought computers had a signature. And C.L. requires all these “filters” and screening gizmos when you post that are impressive. And worthless. Impressive and worthless.

  • Selmers

The thing that gets me is I know for a fact that if this victim called the police saying they had identified their stolen property, the cops would have told them there was nothing they would do. They should have gone with a gun.

  • crazyworld

I second what Selmers comment. Its all to true. Maybe the next article will be… suspect selling stolen product gets shots 5 times…. victims of the stolen product fled the scene and still at large…

I have a pretty decent impression of the Mexican nationality, as of lately some of the Mexicans are pretty frigging crazy . . .killers just like the aholes in oakland..

But I won’t let the losers destroy the good names of the Mexicans I know that are great, hard working, intelligent, caring people…

  • The Blogger

This is a sign of the times. The nothing to lose mentality.

Shooting someone 5 times over a car stereo……

Hispanics are driving Cadillac’s now ? Thank God for Anchor babies!!

It is not a safe area where this crime happened, Right behind Safeway is section 8 housing, Social engineering at its best ! Right on Stockton !

  • outofhere

Over 700 shootings this year and what ? 56 murder’s ? States with the harsh’s gun laws have the worst crime……Go figure. Also California is dying a slow death, To many taker’s as the maker’s leave the state.

  • Cindy

I don’t think this is a safe neighborhood. My mother, who has been shopping at that nearby Safeway for years, has taken her business elsewhere because of the crime in that shopping center. I honestly wonder if there is such a thing in Stockton as a safe neighborhood. As for the police knowing ahead of time about this and said there was nothing they could do…if that’s true, that just makes me sad.

  • sally

If you do anything on Craiglist you are asking for trouble Really look at the history of this site. It’s nothing but TROUBLE with a capital T.

  • outofhere

It is true, The police have lost control of this town. And when the wallstreet bubble bust’s just like the housing market did with bogus inflated number’s the gang’s will control the street’s of Stockton. I will be in a small southern town where people stick together and 30 round clip’s are legal ; )

  • Tom

Go with a gun over $100 dollar stereo are you stupid or just suicidal??

  • chubby

Welcome to Mexico where the criminals run the city and the police are scared to get involved this is only because the are out numbered 20 to 1. Funny we can’t afford the police officers needed to protect but look at the beautiful streets we have all that fancy work on MLK AKA Charterway and others in the area. Now is the time for all law abiding citizens to keep and bear arms its time to rid ourselves of a city Govt. that will not issue a CCW to anyone as for me I am going out with weapon strapped on and I will probably be arrested for it but any criminal will be let alone to carry and rob without restrictions.

Social engineering does not work.

I’m a fourh generation Stocktonian and can’t believe what’s happened to my town. We just moved back here from Reno and can’t believe I felt safer there than I do here in my hometown. Vagrants, panhandlers, and punks. I feel sick.

This is what you get, When you mix Mexico and Oakland together!

  • outofhere

Small Southern town’s do not mess around ! If you are a trouble maker the cop’s WILL plant dope on you and send your ass down the river. :D

Whitey, Go to youtube and search “man vs wild stockton,ca”

  • Whitey

How about just going to costco, walmart or ordering a new stereo online? LOL…U live by the sword, U die by the sword. Get Homeowner’s/Renter’s Insurance.

  • wrongfamilytomesswith

they did call the cops they were told by the cops there was nothing they could do for them. this is my family my nephew that was shot he is doing good. and to see the cops say they shouldnt have went well hell the cops were not going to help.

  • Gone Bad

this is BS..police dont have time to go “recover stolen property ” with all these budget cuts!

  • Gone Bad

Exactly wrongfamilytomesswith! If the cops didnt want to help then what were the other options??? I think these idiots (the shooters) were out to rob the girl but when they seen two guys approach them, then they got scared!!!! Thats what i think. NOT only that but Craigslist needs to ask for reciepts of things that are trying to be sold on there, just because, if you dont have proof you bought it with a legitimate receipt then no ad.

  • outofhere

Sorry to hear about that, Of course the cop’s copped out…..They want their 20 years and out as safe as they can do it. You should of ambushed the a@@hole with a home made icicle and plowed it right through his neck. All CSI would have found was a hole in his neck – water and blood.

  • Gone Bad

    I agree outofhere!

  • outofhere

Growing up in Stockton when I was a kid was great ! Uop homecoming parades on the Miracle Mile, Neighborhood football on Sunday’s…….ect Its all gone. Ruined by California’s soft law’s and social engineering.

  • Mike DuBois

As a misplaced southerner, I say BS. You don’t know what you’re talking about.

  • nek

Oh yeah sure, just call the cops. They’ll run right over to help you get your stereo back.
When seconds count the cops are minutes away.

  • Cindy

Awww…you were misplaced? Has anyone found you yet?

  • dismayed

gee, i wonder if the Stockton PD’s billboards announcing that they wouldn’t be around to help was a good thing?

  • Matt

If you can prove you own a specific item (knowing the serial# would be one way) the cops will handle the sting (at least in Sacramento). But in a case like this how would you prove it was yours? The older the stereo the harder it would be to prove you own it since with an old stereo you probably won’t have a receipt.

  • UhDuh!

Another news site reported on this but didn’t say the internet site. The first thing that came to mind was craigslist. And sure enough, gee willakers, it WAS craigslist! Time to shut that cesspool down. Bad things breed where it’s free. craigslist is a breeding ground for the worst of the worst. DUH

  • Dont Ask

actually there was serial numbers, and not ot mention BRAND NEW EQUIPMENT!! This was not an “old” stereo. Cops wouldnt help, they were called 3x!! BS if u ask me. The shooters were going to rob someone that is why they came with a gun.why else would they bring one??

  • Mcgiggity

Seconds? Minutes? My car window got smashed in gold river last year. Called the cops, they wouldn’t even come out to print it. Told me file an online report.

Cop are not going to help you get your stolen property back, even if you know who stole it and where they love and work(i can say from personal experience.).

They are basically there to prevent people from robbing banks. Maybe pepper spray hippies in Davis from time to time.

My dogs keeps my house a hundred times safer than the police ever would.

  • rmcsticks

dont shut it down just keep shooting the stupid people that want to rob you, keep posting they are so stupid they will keep coming back, and yes they are that dumb !
