California Targets Cybercrime, Identity Theft

SAN JOSE (AP) — California Attorney General Kamala Harris is set to announce the creation of a new criminal unit to investigate and prosecute identity theft, cybercrimes and other criminal activity involving technology.

Harris is scheduled to make the announcement later on Tuesday in San Jose.

Authorities say the number of criminals using technology to carryout illegal behavior and harass victims is increasing. Imprisoned gang leaders try to control criminals on the street using mobile phones smuggled into prisons and convicted offenders have threatened victims through social networks.

In October, The Associated Press reported that Harris' office was considering a major restructuring to make computer and white collar crimes its priority after state budget cuts targeted units that focus on gang and drug enforcement.
