CARMICHAEL (CBS13) — Bronze memorial wall plaques were stolen from Patriots Park in Carmichael over the weekend, according to the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Department.

The plaques are tributes to Carmichael residents who were first responders in law enforcement and medical professions or members of the U.S. military who died on duty.

“You don’t know what you’re messing with,” said an upset Matthew Wesner, who lives near the park. “You’re messing with fallen heroes, people who’ve died for this country. And you’re walking on their land that they fight for.”

The plaques were removed sometime over the weekend from the park, located at 6825 Palm Avenue, and whoever stole them tried to take others off the wall, sheriff’s Officer Jason Ramos said.

The dedication plaque, which ways about 10 pounds, and four smaller, individual plaques were stolen. The Carmichael Parks and Recreation District has put up a sign in their place stating that the plaques were stolen and replacements won’t be up until February.

“You’re going to feel bad later and you’re going to feel remorse,” Wesner said.

Anyone with information on the crime is asked to call the Sheriff’s Department Property Crimes Bureau at (916) 874-5051.

Apparently the recyclers of stolen copper are also fencing stolen brass. Another local park had 2 bronze plaques lifted from their moorings in the past few weeks. Thievery is pathetic.

Find the recycler who excepts these, get the info from him or them. If no info. than throw them in jail. Time to make everyone responible.

I was sickened when I heard this news report. I have always been proud
of Carmichael and all of the community and the good works they have
always been involved with. I am proud to be part of the community and
graduated from La Sierra High School in Carmichael in 1959. No one
from our generation could fathom this kind of theft.
