UPDATE: Man's Body Found In Donner Lake Canoe Accident

DONNER LAKE (CBS13) — Rescue workers on Wednesday found the body of a man missing since his canoe capsized in Donner Lake on Monday night.

Eric William Kiser, 24, of Truckee was found in about 15 feet of water some 150 feet from shore at about 11 a.m. Wednesday, according to Capt. Randy Fenn of the Truckee Police Department. Kiser was in a canoe with a 19-year-old woman whose name hasn't been released when the boat tipped over on Monday night.

When the pair's canoe capsized, it was dark, the water was cold and it was windy, but a 19-year-old woman was able to swim to shore and knock on one of cabins at Donner Lake. She told the people who live inside that she was on a first date.

"Yeah, she said it was their first date," Sophia Langeraar said.

Sophia Langeraar and Jeff Rose were still shaken on Tuesday from the events that unfolded in their back yard Monday night. They had no idea that as they watched TV inside their cabin on the shore, that another couple on the water was struggling to stay alive.

"We heard this banging on the glass windows and Jeff went to the window and she was there shivering," Sophia said. "She didn't have a jacket on, really distraught and she said, 'Can you please call 911?' So we got her inside put her in the shower, then in front of the fire and she was still shivering, and Jeff called 911."

The woman told them at first she and her Kiser clung onto their capsized boat.

"She said they were holding onto the canoe kicking, trying to get to shore and just getting blown out farther, and at some point they just had to decide, you know, we need to just get to shore," Jeff said.

"While she was screaming for help she couldn't hear him anymore," Sophia added.

Truckee police say the couple didn't carry any life jackets and the water dipped down to 39 degrees Monday night by 9:30, when the search was called off for the night. The 911 call came in at about 6:30 p.m. and a Truckee police rescue boat was in the water about an hour later, according to Fenn.

"She estimated she was swimming for about 20 minutes," Fenn said.

Divers immediately began searching for the woman's friend using thermal imaging and choppers in the air used infrared, but there was no sign of the missing man, shifting the mission from rescue to a recovery.

The search resumed early Tuesday morning but was suspended again before sunset.

Rescue workers from the Truckee Police Department, Placer County and Nevada County contributed to the searches.
