Link To 49ers Dynasty Years Lives In Granite Bay

GRANITE BAY (CBS13) — Inside a Granite Bay home is a 49ers shrine created by the man who helped craft the team's dynasty.

Former San Francisco 49ers general manager John McVay, now 81 years old, earned his first Super Bowl ring with the team 30 years ago — and he went on to win four more.

"What would (late Hall of Fame coach) Bill Walsh be saying at this hour?" CBS13's Steve Large asked McVay during a visit to his home on Tuesday.

"About the team? Oh, he would love the quarterback (Alex Smith)," McVay said.

The comparisons between the 49ers now and then are growing. Smith's winning touchdown pass to Vernon Davis was reminiscent of the famous Montana-to-Clark Catch.

But McVay says not so fast.

"This team is creating their own legacy, their own style, their own way of playing," he said.

McVay joined the 49ers in 1979. Montana, Clark, Lott, Rice — they were all drafted on his watch.

"Some of us were treated we were given a pair of Jerry Rice gloves," McKay said.

Now his input is limited to his 49er wardrobe.

"We're all 'what can we do to help?' Wear your shirt," McKay says he was told by team officials.

He likes what he's seeing in 2012.

McVay, a first-hand witness to 49ers history, is now preparing for a return to glory. Only now, he'll be watching Sunday's NFC title game against the New York Giants like most of us — from home.

"Besides, we have cold beer," he joked.
And McVay says he does expect a 49er win. No surprise there. His final score prediction: 31-28.

Mcvay was head coach for the New York Giants for three years before joining the 49ers organization, but he says his 23 years with San Francisco cements his allegiance.
