Sacramento City Council Weighs Change To Strong Mayor

SACRAMENTO (CBS13) - Sacramento Mayor Kevin Johnson is pushing to have more power and the decision could come down to voters.

The City Council voted late Tuesday night to explore the possibility of a strong mayor.

The plan would give the mayor broad new powers, including the ability to veto council decisions.

Opponents say it gives too much power to the mayor.

But supporters say it's necessary to move forward on key projects that are currently stalled by the council.

Either way, some feel it's time for the public to decide.

The City Council is set to discuss the matter again in three weeks.
