Driver Dies In Violent Big Rig Accident On Interstate 5

SACRAMENTO COUNTY (CBS13) – A big rig driver has died after a violent crash in the southbound lanes of Interstate 5, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The accident happened just before 1:30 a.m. Thursday morning when a big rig loaded with groceries slammed into an overpass at Dierssen Road just south of Lambert Road near Elk Grove.

CHP says the big rig was travelling in the north lane and for some reason crossed over the median into the southbound lanes before crashing.

The impact caused the tractor trailer to literally explode apart, scattering groceries all over the side of the road.

The driver was a 55-year-old man from Lodi.

At one point, the entire freeway was shut down. CHP estimated all lanes would reopen by 7 a.m.
