Vandals Knock Out Power To Thousands In North Highlands

NORTH HIGHLANDS (CBS13) – Vandals knocked out power to about 30,000 customers in North Highlands overnight, according to SMUD officials.

SMUD says the vandals hit two substations overnight, possibly attempting to steal copper wiring. The damage knocked out power for about an hour to 30,000 customers.

The outage also took out traffic signals forcing officers to use flares to alert drivers at intersections including Elkhorn and Walerga.

The power was back on by 1:45 a.m.

SMUD says there are security cameras at the substations and they will be looking at surveillance video for clues to the crime.
