SACRAMENTO (AP) — A Northern California man is facing the possibility of life in federal prison after authorities say they seized marijuana plants worth millions of dollars on properties he owned in rural Trinity County.

Prosecutors said Thursday that William Barsanti was indicted by a federal grand jury on charges of cultivating marijuana and conspiring to cultivate marijuana.

The charges come after deputies and Drug Enforcement Administration agents said they seized 2,769 marijuana plants and five pounds of processed marijuana on three of Barsanti’s properties near the Trinity County community of Junction City.

U.S. Attorney spokeswoman Lauren Horwood says the 26-year-old Barsanti did not enter a plea during his initial court appearance.

Court records show he is free after posting a $100,000 bond co-signed by his parents.

Prosecutors say Barsanti could get life in prison if he’s convicted on the conspiracy charges.

What a waste of time and money !

People crossing in from mexico get released after being busted with pounds of meth , coke and weed .

Custom’s agents say we can’t prove they knew it was in the car ?

Please put me on the jury.
He will be found NOT Guilty.

End the war on drugs. It is completely meaningless! America is becoming less and less free every day.

  • Woody

No one should spend even a single day behind bars for growing, using, or selling marijuana. It’s should be handled no differently than tobacco. More than six million people are imprisoned in the United States – far more than in any other country. This is ridiculous. The marijuana laws are ridiculous and unjust.

  • Land of the Free?

The marijuana laws are ridiculous and unjust.
    Well Stated “Woody”
    I Agree

  • Ted

Oh yeah this is a game changer. Yeah lets put this man in prison for life, it will dry up marijuana sales in California I am sure! lol People will have to walk an extra block to get any! The war on drugs is an industry supporting the legal system and the police system. A war nobody really wants to win.

  • Jeff S……

Don’t the DEA have anything better to do!!! Like we need more people lock up in our Jail’s for Grass. Go after the stuff(Meth) that hurts People… So he was growing pot. America’s #1 cash crop…

  • Think again

So we spend over 2 million dollars to house this man for life for pot?
Pot NEVER killed anyone. How about meth, heroine, crack, rapists, murderers, and REAL threats to society>?
Again, there is no justice system. Only a legal system controlled by political ladder climbers and money.
And another thing, how about going after companies like these share file companies [limewire, etc.,...] who have child porn offered on their files? You can arrest all you want for child porn. Until you get to the source and shut it down, it will never stop.
Could it be because government wants it there to make more money and more name for themselves? Think about it!

  • It’s out of hand!

But hey for pot,….give em life!

Anything that gives them publicity and big bucks and satisfaction to the old geezers. No justice for anyone.

  • Heywood!

    Exactly this!

It’s not true that pot is totally safe. I have a recommendation letter for it, because of my Vietnam era Army Service Connected injury adhesions, but I can’t use it. I’m dangerously allergic to pot. Classic allergic symptoms of dangerously falling blood pressure and loss of peripheral sensation. I’m sure other allergic people have died.

  • Get a clue.

No, please research. Even with an allergy, no one has died from pot use.
And, this is view of anything is relative to the person. You have an allergy, you should not use it. Period.
But the attitude you have reflects ignorance. This is like saying peanut butter should be illegal because some people can go into anaphylactic shock because of ingestion. Peanut butter would not be safe to those allergic individuals using it.
I am sorry. You have to come up with a better argument.

  • Eightcats Home

    Dear Get a Clue,
I’m sorry you are so threatened by anybody being clear about the safety of pot. I would very much like to use medical marijuana because it has a much longer effective period of pain relief than opiates and acetaminophen, without those dangers of liver overdose. I’m not arguing that cannabis should be illegal, only that we advocates ought to be more truthful. After doing the research, it appears that the lack of study of the prevalence of cannabis allergy leaves only literature of an anecdotal sort, like my firsthand experience.

  • Get a clue.

Hey Eightcats, Contrary to your opinion, I am not threatened. Rather I find someone being direct quite refreshing. But if you read your first post again, you may find that it comes across to others that you have a problem with it, therefore, it shouldn’t be illegal. If you didn’t mean it that way. No problem.
I for one, believe in honesty of ANY drug on the market. And, even with severe allergy, no one has died from pot use. If the question is …’ Is it possible for people with allergy to it to die?’ Perhaps. Depending on the severity of the allergy.
Then again, with today;s medical knowledge and treatments available, and being informed and doing a ‘test run’, one will not die.
I am actually not an advocate of pot for recreational use, only medical use. Unfortunately like in grade school, the entire class gets punished for those who cheat, or lie, or do something against the rules. People need to grow up as our justice, er, legal system does.
That being said , back to the subject at hand. NO ONE should be in prison for life because of pot.

  • Get a clue.

    correction
‘shouldn’t be illegal’ should read ”should be illegal’.
