RANCHO CORDOVA (CBS13) — Two toddlers wandering the streets in Rancho Cordova wearing only their diapers were found by strangers on Tuesday morning, but their mother insists it was an accident and they’re safe with her.

“My kids are not in danger,” Betty Williams told CBS13 through a screen door at her apartment in the 2600 Block of El Parque Drive. “They are not. I love my babies with all my heart.”

Speaking minutes after being reunited with her toddlers, a boy and a girl ages 2 and 3, Williams begged for mercy — from her neighbors, the public, but mostly from Child Protective Services.

“I will do anything I have to prove and show them my kids are just fine and safe,” she said. “They’re just smart children who know how to open up the door and get out.”

Investigators say her kids were found more than a block away from home by horrified strangers.

Jerrie Douglas heard police outside her door as they searched for nearly an hour for the kids’ mother.

“They were in their diapers together saying Mommy was hurt,” she said. “I guess they couldn’t wake her up and they were knocking on doors around the corner here.”

It was Jerrie who pieced it together that the boy and girl belonged to Betty.

“It was hard to see those kids,” she said.

Williams, a single mother, said she just moved into her apartment Friday after living in homeless shelters for the past four years. She said she was exhausted from the move but at a loss for how her kids got out.

“I don’t know how they got past four locks,” she said. “Four locks!”

Now she’s praying their new life doesn’t end before it’s barely begun.

“I’m doing this all alone,” she sobbed. “You don’t know what I’ve been through. Jesus Christ, Jesus help me. I don’t know what’s going to happen. I don’t, but I don’t have no help. These kids is 2 and 3 years old, and I do this all by myself.”

Deputies returned the children to the apartment, which they said was in good condition, but referred the case to CPS for follow-up.

If your kids can unlock locks you need a lock higher than they can reach. And 2- and 3-year-old children can get into all kinds of other trouble with a sleeping mom.

  • Linda

Homeless for 4 years yet she is still able to have 2 kids. Sounds like i am supporting her and her children. Forced birth control!!!

  • teri

thats so scary, i can’t believe the children were running around for so long. there needs to consequences… first night in her own place and she can’t keep in eye on her kids… is she capable of taking care of them on her own?

  • Savage

Homeless for four years and two children under that age…sound like some real responsible living there, lady.

You’re lucky “random kindness of strangers” happened into play today. You could be reading about them in the “Missing and Exploited” section of the news.

  • Rusty

Of course not. She can’t even take care of herself. She got knocked up twice in less than 2 years, while living in a shelter. I wonder who is paying her rent now.

  • . termite

Like some of the unwed mother , whatever color , they are losers , no family values at home.

  • Elliott the Cat

Kid will be doing the same thing at age 5 age 10 age 20 and age 40 .

Wondering the street with a poop but !

A community should be a support system, not throwing stones. I for one, would like to help her get on her feet. Everyone deserves second chances. The past does not have to dictate the future.

  • ontheedgeofmadness

Two and three year olds in diapers? Be coming pregnant while in a homeless shelter, where is that bogus Planned Parenthood why aren’t they in shelters handing out birth control morning after pills in this country INSTEAD OF POCKETING THE MONEY THEY RECIEVE AND SUPPOSEDLY HELPING WOMEN IN OTHER COUNTRYS OPPS avoid becoming pregnant, those toddlers could have frozen to death or been run over. If the doors were locked they could not get out, put a chair under the door knob. She probably would not have got a place to live if she did not get pregnant and have a couple of babies. She was desperate! I cannot imagine what it would be like to be homeless.

  • Cmores

She carried on for the television when on the news. She has no business having kids. She should be mandatorily sterilized. She says she was tired. From what? Does she have a job? Doesn’t appear the kids were keeping her busy. So what does she have to sleep during the day for? Perhaps too much drinking, drugs or men. Why were the kids only in diapers? Why did she get the kids back? Claudia Bow you go right on and help her. I don’t think you are going to have many members of the community helping her. Well actually that is wrong, she undoubtedly is on welfare. So there is the community helping. She makes me sick. Homeless and saw the need to bring children that she knew she couldn’t support into her sordid world. Pathetic.

  • grow up

My mother raised nine kids alone. Not on welfare, and not one of us was out on the street at any time. Not one of us was ever put in danger. She was exhausted all the time, but her love for us drove her onward.
THIS is what being a parent is all about.
Kids never asked to be here. WE owe them a life of love and PROTECTION. NOT the other way around.

  • It’s out of hand!

There is an ever growing element of society that thinks and feels they are owed by everyone. This so called mother says “I am doing this all alone:.
You opened your legs by yourself at least twice. Grow up and take responsibility for your own actions. RAISE YOUR KIDS> DON”T LET THEM RAISE THEMSELVES!
Just what do you think you are teaching them? What do you think they will do to THEIR kids?
Society is in a deep depressing state of affairs and it is getting worse every second.

  • Get a clue.

You are correct. The past does not have to dictate the future. BUT THE PRESENT DOES! And presently this woman is woman is looking for a hand out not a hand up.
Good luck with that helping attitude. There are those who don’t want help, just someone to do it for them. When you are gone, she will find someone else.

    PLEASE DON’T HAVE ANY MORE.

  • Lavenia Winter

I wish her and her family all the luck, my heart breaks for her.

  • Eric Canterbury

could you tell me where the “missing and exploited” section is, please?

  • Eric Canterbury

‘Society is in a deep(there’s a comma here btw), depressing state of affairs and it is getting worse every second.” Do you realize how nutty you sound? I bet you’re from the Sacramento area too, that would explain the stupidity and bad grammar.
