The Greater Sacramento area is blessed with a number of authentic Mexican restaurants to choose from. From beloved taquerias and local food trucks to more gourmet offerings and tequila bars, you won’t be hard-pressed to find quality Mexican food. However, if you are just looking for a good burrito, how do you narrow down who has the best?  To get you started, here’s a look at five of the more popular spots in Sacramento for the best burrito finds.

Hours: Mon to Sun — 11 a.m. to 9 p.m.

Despite the name, Sal makes a mean burrito as well. The burritos are so large you can’t lift the plate with just one hand. The menu is pretty varied and if there is something you want that is not on the menu, just ask. The decor of Sal’s Tacos is quite eclectic and the owner, Sal Galvan, has combined his love of art, the Sacramento Kings and wine into his restaurant. The walls and even ceilings are filled with mosaics that Sal did himself — some depicting current and former Sacramento Kings players. Sal also makes his own wine that is sold in the restaurant.

Hours: Mon to Sun — 8 a.m. to 9 p.m.

Oscar’s is a longtime favorite stop for Sacramento locals looking for good Mexican food. Often called an “institution” for burrito lovers, Oscar’s is always voted in the top five for best burritos and Mexican food. Two of its most loved creations include the breakfast burrito and the California burrito, made with French fries instead of refried beans.

Hours: Open 24 hours

For the last four years in a row, Adalberto’s has either won or contested in the top four for “Best Burrito in Sacramento” on the KCRA awards. There are several locations throughout the city, providing burritos any time of the day or night. Adalberto’s is a favorite with the late night party crowds looking to satiate their craving for Mexican food once the bars and clubs close. Favorite eats from Adalberto’s include the carne asada and California burritos, and be sure to save room for some carne asada fries as well.

Hours: Mon to Thurs, Sun — 11 a.m. to 9:30 p.m., Fri and Sat — 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. (other locations’ hours may vary)

Founded just west of Sacramento in Davis, Dos Coyotes Border Cafe has grown to seven locations including Roseville, Elk Grove, Folsom and East Sacramento. If you want a burrito that breaks down typical burrito stereotypes, Dos Coyotes Border Cafe is your place. There is an entire burrito menu including unique finds like Paella, Salmon (when available) and Mahi Mahi. There is a Lean and Mean burrito designed for athletes and high performance lifestyles, and for those watching carbs, try the Border Bowl, Dos Coyotes’ signature Border Burrito, just without the tortilla.

Hours: Lunch until sold out

Senor Burrito is a food cart on the corner of 7th and I Streets in downtown Sacramento that claims to serve the best burrito in town. This cart has been a staple for around 20 years and people flock to “Mr. Burrito” to grab one of his fresh burritos at lunch. Tortillas are homemade — no store bought mass-produced ones will be found in this food cart — and all the ingredients are fresh. Everything on the menu is $4.50 and regulars recommend getting there around 11:30 a.m., as he is often sold out by 12:30 p.m. Two favorites are the Chile Colorado and the chicken and rice burritos.
