Gas Prices Rise To Record Levels For February

SACRAMENTO (CBS13) -- It's a three-day weekend for lots of folks with Presidents' Day on Monday, but high gas prices could but a damper on holiday traveling.

A gallon of regular unleaded gas is hovering around the $4 range in the Sacramento area and could climb as high as $5 this summer.

The average in California is $3.99, according to AAA, and across the country gas prices are the highest they've every been at this time of the year. They've jumped 25 cents per gallon since January.

Rising costs of crude oil, tensions with Iran and a cold snap in Europe are being blamed for the price hike.

Whatever the reason, motorists are none too happy about it.

"What do I think? I couldn't say it on TV," one man fueling up in West Sacramento told CBS13.

Experts say the high gas prices could have numerous dominoes effects, including skipping out on vacations and tightening their pocketbooks in an already depressed economy.
