SAN DIEGO (AP) — A man who was born with half a left arm is suing Starbucks for failing to hire him as a barista.

Eli Pierre sued the company in San Diego two weeks ago for unspecified damages.

Pierre says that during a Feb. 1 interview for a San Diego job, the store manager told him that the coffee flavoring syrups were placed high up and a one-armed man couldn’t work there.

The discrimination suit claims that the former bartender was capable of doing the job but was never given a chance to fully explain his capabilities or possible accommodation as required under state law.

Starbucks says it employs many disabled persons and Pierre’s disability wouldn’t disqualify him. The company says his application was thoughtfully considered and disputes his version of the interview.

  • vanillalattelover”HOT”

The coffee at Star Bucks is hot he would endanger customers as well as himself you need two hands to prepare and hand those hot drinks to customers. safety is always “FIRST” when serving hot drinks etc..he needs to go back to bar tending its not dangerous for him or the customers cold drinks won’t maim ya. He is discriminating against Star Bucks.

Next thing you know this reject idiot will go and apply for a firefighting job with some county and sue them for not getting hired.

  • James

totally agrees with you he would either end up spilling the hot drink on himself or the customer and safety alwasy comes first when hiring someone for a job

  • nothingchanges

Absolutely, Not saying he is doing it but there are disabled people running around California looking for A.D.A. violations and filing lawsuits.

It’S all BS. Trying to get a free ride.

The fact that the applicant has worked as a bartender is evidence that he would likely be able to do the job. The store manager clearly discriminated by saying a one-armed person couldn’t do the job. Just because the manager doesn’t understand how doesn’t mean it can’t be done; it is the manager’s responsibility to find out HOW the applicant functions in that kind of a setting. The applicant should have been given a chance to demonstrate his ability. Also, the applicant isn’t really “one-armed;” he has half of an arm, which he undoubtedly uses to help carry and balance items.

Lots of people who two arms are klutzes and couldn’t function as baristas or bartenders.

“he has half of an arm, which he undoubtedly uses to help carry and balance items.” Maybe they though he would do a half a$$ job ? :D

May you never suffer a disability. May you never have to find ways to accommodate and then have ignorant people assume you can’t and then withhold opportunities from you because of ignorant assumptions.
