Winter Weather Expected This Week

SACRAMENTO (CBS13) - A cold weather system is moving into Northern California and should bring with it some light rainfall in the Sacramento valley and snow in the Sierra.

This system is only expected to bring very light amounts of rainfall to the valley and likely only an inch or two of snowfall to the mountains, but snow levels will be quite low, falling as low as 1,000 to 2,000 feet in the foothills.

There will be a brief break on Tuesday followed by a stronger weather system forecast to swing through Northern California on Tuesday night and Wednesday, according to the National Weather Service.

This system will bring periods of valley rain, mountain snow and gusty winds at least into Thursday. Rainfall amounts in the valley are forecast to range from a third of an inch in the northern San Joaquin Valley to three quarters of an inch in the northern Sacramento Valley.

Windy conditions will accompany this system. The Sacramento Valley will see southerly winds of 20 to 30 mph Wednesday while the higher elevations of the sierra could see wind gusts in excess of 50 to 60 mph.

The winds combined with snowfall will make mountain travel hazardous later this week.
