Parents Forced To Camp Out For Lincoln Kindergarten Spots

LINCOLN (CBS13) – Dozens of parents in one Lincoln community are being forced to camp out for three nights in hopes of getting their kids into a kindergarten class.

Lincoln Crossing Elementary is so impacted there only a limited amount of open spots available. Registration begins at 7 a.m. on Tuesday.

Jonathan Brose came prepared for a long night with “tent chairs and lots of water.”

So did the other parents in line with him outside the school. They’re competing for their children to get one of 105 available kindergarten seats next school year, but it’s first come, first serve.

Nick Kosmides has the coveted first spot in line, guaranteeing his daughter a spot. “She’s proud, she’s excited,” he said.

While he and the couple dozen parents after him are in good shape, parents farther back in line like Jonathan actually may not make it at all.

“I thought I had until about 4 or 5 o’ clock tonight,” he said.

Although there are 105 kindergarten seats about half of them are already taken because kindergarten students with older siblings at Lincoln Crossing are automatically guaranteed a spot. So in reality, there are only 54 kindergarten openings.

“It is frustrating when I am paying tax dollars, especially living in this community, to not be able to have my kid immediately go to this school,” Jonathan said.

The families who moved into the neighborhood were told another elementary school would be built by this year. But the economy put the plans on hold.

“Feel cheated,” Nick said. “We were promised a school when we bought into this community.”

So every year, this is what parents must do to get into Lincoln Crossing or their kids go to an overflow school.

“Living right next to a school does not guarantee your kid can get into a school,” Jonathan said.

The problem is illustrated in the title: “Parents forced to camp out for Lincoln Kindergarten spots”

Forced? By whom? I did not read anything in the article about parents being forced, either by children with weapons or anyone else to camp out.

Could that title be re-framed to be “Parents who want the best education available for their children choose to camp out for three days?”

It seems the same, except for in the former, the implication is that people are entitled to education, and to secure that entitlement, they are ‘forced’ to camp out.

The reality is that the only thing that is ‘forcing’ parents to camp out is a restriction on resources, and somehow this school has less restricted resources than the overflow schools around it. But it’s a bit disingenuous to say that these people were ‘forced’ to camp out, any more than it is to say “Occupy Wall Street” protestors ‘forced’ to camp in the park.

Nobody’s forcing anyone to do anything. Perhaps camping out is now required to get a school spot — which is not ideal to say the least — but nobody is being forced to do it.

no child left behind (no illegal alien left behind). Simple solution, start checking papers, kick out the have nots.

How bout opening a private school. Within a year or two, the public school would be empty.

No shortage of made up stories still in the news after the coup and cover up. Unelected officials took over Washington and the media. They think you can’t handle the truth. Fact of the matter is we have no democracy, president, and freedom of press is an illusion.

Our next election is shaping up to be as big of a sham as the last. Do you know why Sarah Palin’s bus tour was really canceled? Do you know why she stayed 30 miles away from the second debate and chose the death of Steve Jobs to announce that she’s not running? Know what leaked out? Sarah Palin and Cain aren’t in the race for the same reason, the truth leaked out. Search PalinsDirtyLittleSecret for the biggest cover up in history

Obama’s education policies, yet another violation of our rights. The gov’t constantly violates our rights.

They violate the 1st Amendment by caging protesters and banning books like “America Deceived II”.

They violate the 4th and 5th Amendment by allowing TSA to grope you.

They violate the entire Constitution by starting undeclared wars.

    Impeach Obama, support Ron Paul.

Last link of “America Deceived II” before it is completely banned:

It’s “first come, first SERVED.” Does CBS have no editors?

At the risk of having hate replies aimed at me by…”progressives”…if there are any of these kids who are illegal aliens (yes, that’s the correct term, my own wife is a legal alien in this country) then they should not be allowed in. Americans and children of legal aliens should always, always get first chance.

Make sure they start early in the indoctrination of their innocent minds. The godless atheistic government school system will teach them how to be godless reprobates just like their parents. You talk about child abuse, what kind of a fool satanic parent would give their children to the child molesting perverts to teach them that they evolved from a monkey. I know, its’s a parent that wants time away from the mistake they made by having the “kid” in the first place. You better take heed to God’s preserved word. God expects YOU not the satan controlled state to train your children. “Train up a child in the way he should go, when he is old he will not depart from it.”-Proverbs 22:6. First of all You need to Repent and Receive the LORD JESUS CHRIST as SAVIOUR before you can train anybody. Acts 20:21; Romans 10:9-13

I sure do feel sorry for your kids. I just wonder what will happen to them when they do get out into the real world. They probably would have to be on welfare all of their lives, Godforbid they had to WORK with satanic people.

Any homeschooled child can beat a publickly educated student hands down on any test any day of the week, the stats prove it, and my children proved it thank you. If it were not for God’s people this present evil world would collapse under its alcohol, drugs, tattoos, fornication, sex perverts-child molestors in the public schools of America. You are a fool if you think for one second that a child of God would have to be on welfare. God meets the needs of His people that trust Him and live for Him. The difference in the child of God that has received the Lord Jesus Christ as Saviour and a lost hell bound sinner is who they trust in. You by your own words evidently trust the government and its ruler the devil that has you blind and deceived in your sin and unbelief. You better be considering your end and place of eternal abode-heaven or hell, there is no purgatory. You must Repent and Receive the LORD JESUS CHRIST as Saviour or you will die and go to hell (Acts 20:21; Romans 10:9-13)

Sounds like an opportunity to start a private school or maybe one parent stay home and home-school their children. We need to quit being dependent on the government so much that they have us sleeping outside for a benefit we have already paid for. Quit being govenment lackeys as it is only going to get worse since we don’t have enough monies to pay off the debt as it is.

The parents ” are being ‘FORCED’ to camp out for 3-nights” Did Gov. Moonbeam (force) them?
I thought this only happened when they wanted to buy the latest Michael Jordan bassit bow shoes.

“Charter Schools” still receive FEDERAL money. That means they are another layer of bureauocricy of the Department of Education. The teacher’s unions will have an iron-fisted grip on the system, and it will be just as dysfunctional as the rest of the public school system.
The gov’t. can try their hardest to imitate private schools, but it will never work. Thank the unions.

  • Bill smith

Why do we even have a Department of Education at the federal level? Obama could share in Carter’s legacy by firing everyone in the DoEd and abolishing the agency. How is that for saving tax money my democrat friends?

They should have built a bigger school and I have not seen many darkies out here

  • Patrick

I live in this community. My daughter will be in kindergarden in 2 years, and my son does not go to the neighborhood school due to lack of room instead we drive him to another school 5 miles away. The parents were not forced. they would just rather their school be close to where they live and have their kids classmates their neighbors. When they built this community they were suppose to build 2 schools. they built one. one block from my house is a lot with a rotting sign on it that states future school 2012. But the school district spent all the money on admin instead of schools and teachers. problem is they built a new community, attracted young familes to them and did not provide the facilities young breeding families need even though the comunity has huge taxes and bonds on it to pay for them. The problem will get worse as the neighborhood is full of babies. We cant move as nobody will buy a house that has no schools or parks for kids and all of the homes are under water.

also this is placer county, mostly republican part of california. all of you fellow republicans think all of california is blue your comments here make you look like fools for not knowing the whole story. I have red blood in my veins.

Well said, Patrick. Even though we sarcrificed to send our son to Catholic and then later to Christian schools, it is such an impossibility for parents now to afford the high prices of private schools. You may be in a neighborhood where parents want to and are allowed to be involved in their local school (other than the administration wanting them to only fund raise). The parents there might consider starting a Charter School. Our local one has been doing great since day one and the parents are really plugged in. You do not have to deal with unions.
