Mudslide Blocks Road For Hours In Newcastle

NEWCASTLE (CBS13) - Snow isn't the problem in Placer County. One neighborhood is digging out of the mud after a massive slide blocks a road for hours.

"Oh my goodness; boy, I was always thinking there was more rock in this ground," said a resident.

Newcastle residents in one neighborhood woke up to a massive mudslide.

"Mother nature is incredible," said a resident.

Piles of mud were blocking powerhouse road.

"I was surprised I didn't hear it," said a resident.

"I was just feeling bad for our neighbors. That's not an inexpensive ordeal," said a resident.

And this spot in particular may have been more at risk than other hills around it.

"This is the top of an old ancient riverbed and all these bumps up here are from lava cap that's all imported soil from somewhere else and it may not have been compacted so well," said a resident.

The clean-up has taken hours as crews worked to remove the mess.

"We've already got some good vegetation down there to help, but do the best we can to eliminate the dirty water," said Jim Helling, Placer County Sr. Road District Supervisor.

And there's the fear that mother nature might not be done.

"Hope for the best; no rain!" said a resident.

In the meantime, residents are keeping a close eye on trees and power lines in the area, even some homes. Everyone hoping the situation doesn't get worse.

"It's just gonna be a wait and see. Wait and see, that's all we can do right now," said Helling.

Powerhouse Road is now back open.
