ELK GROVE (CBS13) – You’ve heard the saying smoke ’em if you got ’em. But if you got ’em and you live in an apartment complex in Elk Grove, the luxury of lighting up may soon go up in smoke.

“i think it’s a pretty good idea,” one apartment resident said.

He’s talking about the possibility of banning smoking in all apartment complexes in the city.

A Sacramento-based trade association that works with landlords is against the idea, however.

“We don’t think it’s necessary,” said Cory Koehler with the Rental Housing Association. We support an owner’s right to choose the policy that’s in the best interest of their particular property. But what we don’t support is a new law by local government forcing the owner to do that.”

That’s because hundreds of apartment complexes in Elk Grove are already smoke-free. Property owners – many argue – have made the move without government intervention.

But a father and apartment resident wants the ban to go into effect:

“I think it’s harmful to the human body and especially to younger kids who live here,” he said.

Others say no way and are left shaking their heads.

“I don’t think it’s right,” one resident said. “That’s kind of violating people’s rights.”

The right to light up vs. the power of a possible ordinance – this smokin’ hot debate over a cigarette showdown has only just begun.

The City Council will take up the issue at its meeting next week.

Applying Pelosi’s latest rationale tto this situation: Smoking is my inherent right to “life, liberfty and the pursiuit of happinsess” as guaranteed by the Declaration of Independence. How can Californians have it both ways? Oh, yeah they’re also for transgenders and bi-sexuals and other nifty, radical ideals.

I weep that we have come to the point that this conversation could even take place in the Former United States of America…

These are the kinds of things that happen when a nation of formally-free people become weak, gullible, and mindless sheep. This is clear proof that open Fascism has come to the fools of Mexifornia.

I’m going to think about this article and the ensuing commentary. And I’ll enjoy a cigar whilst doing so.

Don’t be poor and not be able to own your own property…then you’ll find out just exactly who GIVES you all your rights – the mobocracy.

  6. JustAGuy says:

We need just one more ban to fix all bans and return the country to a state of sanity.

    Ban liberalism!

More social engineering in progress. When will Elk Grove ban cars within the city? When will the Elk Grove citizens be required to eat Broccoli or put solar panels on everyone’s home? The people on the city council need to get a real job and leave everyone else alone!

When will smokers wise up and get smoking declared a disability? Why not? Then let the libs try to push us around.

    1. Greatgrandma says:

Good idea! Just like alcoholism, drug addiction, hoarding, obesity, etc.
Where will all the Medical marijuana smokers light up???

  11. Jimmy says:

Do any af the houses or apartments in Elks Grove have fireplaces? Would those need to be banned as well, since they can burn much worse things then a cigarette?

  12. Leroy says:

More limited freedom brought to you courtesy of liberalism.

  13. stanleycustom says:

Next stop banning smoking in private residences.

  14. Megan says:

All you freedom-haters…LEAVE if you dont like it in this country! Before they come after YOUR vice.

Being this is in California, why do I get the feeling that smoking bans will apply only to tobacco and not to pot. Both are harmful to the body, both pose a fire hazard if you drop a lit one on the carpet. Even pot leaves smoke particulates in the lungs as well as other chemicals in the blood that do not exist there naturally, in short both are harmful. But since pot is politically correct in California and most of the left coast states and tobacco isn’t, the typical liberal double standard will surely be enforced.

I SAY BAN IT: I have lived in plenty of apartments and can attest, as can many of you I imagine, that they are cheaply built. That being said, I cannot tell you how many times I have had to put up with my apartment being full of the stench of cigarette smoke from some neighbor. Does not matter whether the windows are open or not, nothing you do makes it better. My little girl had to practically take a nightly bath in cigarette smoke and nothing legally could be done about it. Banning smoking in apartment buildings is not an invasion of privacy, it actually prevents invasion of privacy.

    1. Greatgrandma says:

Why do you live in a place you despise? Are you on the taxpayer dole? Move to the many, many non-smoking buildings available! Take care of your little girl by moving!!! It is your RIGHT.

      1. netshark says:

By the same toke Michael it is not your right to push your odor preferences on others, and you should have all foods, colognes, scented candles and everything else with an order banned from your residence.

I knew well that the “toxin” argument wasnt the real issue when these people were fighting savagely against smokers. Even when it’s banned and you cant breathe it or smell it, they go after images of it.

The whole my body my right thing I guess only applies to those actually killing people.

You would think the human race couldnt survive without these pinheads forcing you to save yourself. lol

  17. dgyarbro says:

I don’t mind banning smoking on someone else’s property, as long as we reserve the right to kill another human being (as long as said human is young enough) or to change your gender or to marry whomever you want (in fact should we really tell a man/woman/transgender that they cannot marry another “animal”? Say a snake?
