Davis Elementary Boys Reportedly Offered Pot During Lunch Hour

DAVIS (CBS13) - Police say two teenagers tried to deal drugs to kids at a Davis elementary school, and that's not the only reason parents say they're upset.

The principal at Marguerite Montgomery Elementary School is crediting her students for reacting the right way. But now parents are left concerned for their children's safety.

Tara Olsen wants the teenagers who offered her 12-year-old stepson drugs to be punished.

"Kids can't get away with this," she said. "If it was me we would be sitting in jail, but unfortunately the suspects are being treated as victims."

Olsen's step-son and two classmates - all black - were approached during lunch hour on the open campus by two teenagers. Olsen says they were offered marijuana and when they turned it down, the two teenagers called them the "n" word and told them to "go back to Africa."

Principal Sally Plicka says the students did exactly what they were supposed to do by immediately informing the staff.

"They were courageous in how they handled the situation," she said. "The most important thing for us to do immediately was secure the campus. All parents were notified as soon as we could appropriately have staff available."

But Olsen says she was not notified fast enough and her stepson was questioned by police without her knowing about it.

"Having 12-year-olds interviewed by police and not calling their parents and saying 'Would you like to be there?' to me that's wrong," she said.

Olsen says what's most upsetting is that there have been no charges against the teenagers while police and the school say they're still working on their investigation.

"There's an innocence lost but we do our best to explain to him that these things do come up," she said.

Police say they're still searching for the suspects. Meanwhile, the elementary school says it will add security.
