The Grant Napear Show - March 30, 2012

Today on the Grant Napear show, there was much discussion about the hang up in the Kings' arena deal terms sheet. Grant gave his thoughts about the current confusion, and he also took calls on what listeners thought about the disagreement. He also took calls about the Kings's matchup on Friday night in Utah against the Jazz. Grant interviewed George Maloof.

Sacramento Kings's Owner George Maloof to talk about the hang up in the Kings' arena deal terms sheet. George said that everyone in the Maloof family was 100 percent committed to staying in Sacramento, and everyone is in on, and for the arena project.

Next, George talked about the disagreement in the terms sheet. NBA Commissioner David Stern said on Grant's show that there was still a lot of work to do before finalizing a deal to build an arena in Sacramento. The hang up comes with the $3.25 million predevelopment costs of building the arena. The Maloofs don't believe that they should pay for predevelopment costs, since they are only paying to rent the arena, and not to build it. George said that the term sheet hasn't been fully negotiated, and that there is a full section for the predevelopment costs that still needs to be negotiated.

Next, Grant asked about what this means going forward. George said that the current disagreement is between a bump and a hurdle that can be worked out. Despite the current dispute, George is very optimistic that the deal can get done. He made it a point to say that the Maloof family's intention was to work with the city and to get something done at the site downtown, and that they weren't looking at another city or to do something that would hinder this current deal. George said that this process takes time, and that the Maloofs need to use their time wisely.

Grant also asked about the $73.25 million that the Maloofs have agreed to already pay, and if they had that money. George said that they had a commitment for that money and that the $3.25 million is a hang up because of the principle of paying predevelopment costs. He also said that this is part of negotiating, and that there are bound to be disagreements. The Maloofs don't think that they should pay the predevelopment cost or reimburse AEG for their costs of predevelopment. George said that they want to get a deal done, but under the right circumstances.

Finally, George discussed the misconception about what happened in Orlando over NBA All-Star Weekend. There was a thought that a deal was agreed upon to build an arena. However, George said that framework for a deal was set, but no concrete deal was agreed upon.
