My Say On Blu Ray Blog: 'Pillow Talk'

There's a scene in "Pillow Talk" in which Rock Hudson is pretending to be gay... to avoid getting tangled with Doris Day. Upon release, the scene probably played hysterically. Now, it may run as a sad reminder of a great actor's hidden life. BUT... it also plays so sweetly, that you can almost see Hudson enjoying the subterfuge. In the end, all that's neither here nor there... "Pillow Talk" is just one of these classic romantic comedies that today's comedies hope to be. It's light and fun and a great Friday night flick. You could almost see it being remade like "You've Got Mail"... as a tome on the internet and social media age. In fact, the story is almost identical, as much to that as "Shop Around the Corner". (Note to film execs: I get commission on that idea if this is remade!!). If you like your sweet extra sugary… this one's for you.

As with past releases, Universal's 100th Anniversary booklet packaging is top of the industry and includes everything a film fan could ask for, not to mention that the film looks great.

As part of its 100th Anniversary this year, Universal Studios Home Entertainment will offer special re-issues of selected catalog titles, and the Pillow Talk Blu-ray will arrive in the May wave. This classic romantic comedy stars Doris Day (The Man Who Knew Too Much) and Rock Hudson (Giant) as two young professionals who forge a connection through their shared telephone line.

From Universal's official synopsis:

"When uptight interior decorator Jan Morrow (Day) is forced to share a telephone party line with carefree playboy Brad Allen (Hudson), there is no connection between them. However, when the two accidentally meet in person, sparks fly and the smitten Brad pretends to be a wealthy Texan, wooing Jan with late-night calls."

Directed by Michael Gordon (Cyrano de Bergerac), the film also features Tony Randall (Gremlins 2: The New Batch) and Thelma Ritter (All About Eve).

Universal's Blu-ray/DVD/Digital Copy combo pack presents the film in its 2.35:1 original aspect ratio with a 2.0 DTS-HD Master Audio track. The disc also contains the following supplements:
Commentary with film historians Jeff Bond, Julie Kirgo, and Nick Redman
