My Say on Blu Ray Blog: The Grey

People made the mistake of thinking that director Joe Carnahan's "The Grey" was a movie about... well... punching wolves. If all you saw was the trailer, you might think that. You might make that mistake.

"The Grey" is much, much more.

Is it an action movie? Yes. Is it a thriller? Yes. However, it is also an incredibly moving story of men facing certain death. They do not go lightly. They are fathers and husbands, and you see how a man might actually deal with this hopelessness. They do not become superheroes, they stay the men they are... and face down their fates. It is powerful and exceptional, and I hope it gets it's due come awards time.

Universal Studios and Open Road Home Entertainment will bring The Grey to Blu-ray in May. Directed by Joe Carnahan (Smokin' Aces), this gritty adventure stars Liam Neeson (Taken) as Ottway, a security consultant who tries to lead a group of oil roughnecks to safety after a plane crash leaves them stranded in the Alaskan wilderness. Already struggling with the harsh physical realities of their environment, Ottway and the other survivors must combat even greater peril on their trek as they defend themselves against a pack of vicious wolves.

In addition to Neeson, The Grey features a talented supporting cast that includes Frank Grillo (Warrior), Dermot Mulroney (Zodiac), Joe Anderson (Across the Universe), James Badge Dale (The Pacific), and Dallas Roberts (3:10 to Yuma).

Universal's Blu-ray/DVD/UltraViolet Digital Copy combo pack presents the film in its 2.39:1 original aspect ratio with a 5.1 DTS-HD Master Audio track. The disc features Universal's U-Control, pocket BLU, Advanced Remote Control, Video Timeline, Mobile-To-Go, and Keyboard functionalities as well as the following supplements:
Commentary with Joe Carnahan and editors Roger Barton & Jason Hellmann
Deleted scenes
The Grey streets on May 15th.
