Modesto Free Dental Clinic Serves Thousands, More Still Waiting

MODESTO (CBS13) - Lines are dying down, but early Friday morning 1200 people showed up in Modesto for free dental care.

"I haven't been to the dentist since I was little, little, little," said Perry.

College student Melissa Perry slept outside in line for a chance to get her wisdom teeth pulled.

"I feel lucky to have this. I've been telling everybody thank you because I'm so thankful," said Perry.

The California Dental Association Foundation Clinic performed the costly oral surgery for free.

More than 1500 patents are expected to be treated during the two day clinic.

"We're cleaning teeth, extracting teeth, filling teeth, and we are all here today and tomorrow," said Orthodontist Dr. Don Rollofson.

The need is clear.

Organizers say, in 2009 the state cut dental benefits for 3 million low-income adults.

"Without that safety net, the only thing they can do is wait until they get an infection, go to the emergency room, get some antibiotics, the infection sort of goes away, the pain might get a little better, but it doesn't fix the problem," said Rollofson.

"I'm very thankful," said Oliver.

After for 24 hours, Ruth Oliver's problem is fixed.

Laid off two years ago, her teeth went down hill fast.

"I had a loose tooth, and a lot of rot and decay, and they fixed me right up," said Oliver.

The fresh face is what she hopes will help her land a job.

"Your appearance means a lot, and this will give me my confidence," said Oliver.

Some people waited hours but were not able to get into the clinic. So, they are considering sleeping in line to secure a spot for the next day.
