Veterans Remembered At Mount Vernon Ceremony

FAIR OAKS (CBS13) - Memorial Day observances were held all across the Sacramento region on Monday.

Local Boy Scouts and Cub Scouts helped to honor fallen service men and women at Mount Vernon Memorial Park in Fair Oaks.

This is what Memorial Day is all about, remembering the heroes who have served past and present.

"We honor those that died for us they died so we can live," Alice O'Kane said.

"I'm a veteran, I know what the guys went through and I lost a lot of friends," Alice's husband, Bob O'Kane said.

It was a touching tribute for the military with National Guard bagpipes and a jet flyover. One serviceman said the service really helps him grieve. His best friend is buried here after he died in war in 2005 so ceremonies like this provide him closure.

Those at Mount Vernon hope people don't take this as just a day off or a day to barbeque but a day to say thank you to the millions who put their lives on the line so we can all be here.

"Freedom isn't really free," National Guard Col. William Arruda said. "People have to die pay for freedom. It's up to us, the living, to honor them."

Boy Scouts laid out flags each one representing a life cut short - a life Monday participants hope won't be forgotten.
