Drunk Driving Suspects Shown DUI Victim Photos During Sobriety Test

SACRAMENTO (CBS13) - If the regular DUI checkpoint doesn't get drivers' attention, Sacramento police hope a new approach will.

With a slew of graduations and the beginning of summer, officers are doing something they hope will send a shock to those who may not be able to feel much.

"Often times we hear all the numbers, the statistics, but we don't put faces with those statistics," said Sgt. Chris Prince, Sacramento Police DUI Enforcement.

For the first time, Sacramento police are pairing up with MADD to give those suspected of driving while intoxicated an in-your-face face to face with the victims of that very crime.

It's a collage of shame, so to speak, for those accused to stare at those who have passed away at the hands of a drunk driver.

"We hope to remind folks that DUI is a real a real thing and DUIs kill real people, and remind them through these visuals of the victims," said Prince.

One woman we spoke with who says she used to drink drive often, it's a wake-up call.

"It sent a strong message because it got my attention today as I was driving down the road," she said.

On this Friday fun day, it's an attempt to face the fact that more 700 people are killed in California every year.

"It's just not a statistic you hear about on the news, these are real people and people we know and live with," said Prince.

The suspects have to face the victims while they take the breathalyzer.
