FORESTHILL (CBS13) – One man was arrested for claim jumping at a gold mine near Foresthill on Saturday night and his brother was later taken into custody on similar charges, according to the Placer County Sheriff’s Office.
Sheriff’s detectives took Timothy Figel, 52, of Newcastle, into custody while he was trespassing at the undisclosed mine.
The sheriff’s office has been called to the mine for theft reports since the late 1990s, where thieves are processing the tailings to extract gold. Property that belongs to the mine’s owner has also been stolen.
Figel was booked at the Placer County Jail on charges of burglary and theft or attempted theft of gold. His brother Thomas, 49, also of Newcastle, was arrested Tuesday on charges of theft or attempted theft of gold.
Detectives believe more suspects may be involved in the thefts and are continuing their investigation.
