Sacramento Women's Football Team Hopes To Claim 5th Championship Title In Texas

SACRAMENTO (CBS13) - A local football team is headed to a national championship, but you won't find any men on this team.

The Sacramento Sirens is an all women's football team that's headed to Texas.

They all lead different professions.

"I'm an attorney," said one team member.

"I'm an inventory analyst for Hewlett Packard," said another.

These 33 women will gear up, strap on the helmet, and head to Texas to play in a championship game as Sirens.

The Sacramento Sirens proved to be one of the best in the Independent Women's Football League.

On July 28, they make their fifth title appearance, something that no other team has accomplished.

"2010 was a sour memory and they want to go back and change that," said Margie Wells, offensive line coach.

The sirens go into Texas with four championship rings under their belt. There's just one small obstacle in the way, the Montreal Blitz have only lost one game in the past 26.

Eight year veteran and team hard hitter Michelle Machado is in her forties but still brings the intensity it takes to win it all.

'I think it's more of the heart and what inside versus your age. I'm surrounded by youths so I need to keep up with the youngsters on the team," said Machado.

While a national title is on the line, the sirens have generated an international buzz. Noriko Kokura traveled from Japan to wear the black and gold.

"I love football so much, and I love sirens football," said Kokura.

The Sacramento Sirens will be heading out to Round Rock, Texas, on Thursday.
