Against what was possibly the toughest field in golf this year, Dixon’s Nick Watney managed a final round 69 on the difficult Bethpage Black golf course and catapulted himself to the top of the FedEx Cup standings.
The impressive victory salvaged a lackluster season and pushed Watney into Ryder Cup discussions as a possible Captain’s pick. Not bad for four days work.
The final round turned into a two player grind with Sergio Garcia in the lead to start the day, but Watney passed him by the end of the front nine and never let go after that. In fact he didn’t miss a green until the 16th hole.
Watney has had a history of playing well on difficult courses but he’s yet to make a serious run at a major, but now in his early thirties, he’s proven he has the chops to become a major player on the tour. Solid play over the next few weeks and he may find himself on Team USA heading to the Ryder Cup.
