For the second year in a row, the Sacramento State Hornets have beaten a Pac-12 team on the final play of the game. This year it was walk-on kicker, Edgar Castaneda, nailing a 30-yard field goal on the final play of the game to the shock of Colorado Buffalo fans on their home field.
But that’s not the best story of the day. Hornet head coach Marshall Sperbeck awarded his kicker a partial scholarship, much to the delight of the Castaneda family.
For Castaneda, the accolades didn’t stop there. The Hornet kicker was mentioned on ESPN’s College football Final and his performance earned him co-Big Sky Conference Special Teams Player of the Week.
The junior college transfer is five for six on field goals and leads the team with 19 points scored. His five field goals are already two more than the Hornets made all last year.
Sacramento hosts Northern Colorado this Saturday at Hornet Stadium for its home opener.
