Downtown Businesses Offering Discounts For Shopping Local And Shopping With Friends

SACRAMENTO (CBS13) - The next time you shop in downtown Sacramento, you may want to bring a friend as businesses are offering discounts to those who shop together.

The Angles love a good deal.

"Give us some money off and we'll buy," the couple said.

That's exactly what downtown Sacramento businesses are doing to get you to spend.

"I'm not much of a shopper, but maybe I will now," said one Sacramento man.

If you're shopping alone, slash 10 percent off your purchase at participating downtown and Old Sacramento businesses.

However, if you bring a friend and they buy something too, that discount doubles to 20 percent for both of you.

"The idea is we're getting people to spend money in their local communities, and it gets invested back into those local communities," said Lisa Martinez with the Downtown Sacramento Partnership.

Martinez says that's the key to keeping small business alive in this economy.

"We have so many incredible locally owned businesses. These folks employ folks within our own community, and they also contribute to our own economic vitality of our city," said Martinez.

One of those businesses is Mea Vita in Old Sacramento.

"I think it's a great opportunity to introduce to our local customers," said Aida Makarevic, Mea Vita.

The custom jewelry and clothing shop opened five years ago right before the economy turned.

"We're still here which is wonderful in this economy," said Makarevic.

It's in large part because of returning local customers.

"We've had a steady increase, not a very high increase, but a steady increase from year to year and that's great to see," said Makarevic.

The Angles say what's also great to see is saving money.

"If it were 40 percent it would be even better," they said.

The promotion runs through September 22.
