SANTA CLARA (KCBS) — Representatives for the San Francisco 49ers say they reached another milestone in their estimated $1.2 billion stadium project in Santa Clara. Workers now have installed half the steel beams that will form the backbone of the stadium.
The structural outline of the new stadium is taking shape not too far from California’s Great America amusement park.
Project Executive Jack Hill said 14,000 pieces of steel will be installed at the site.
“It’s like building a house at the same time you’re designing it. Because we do have an aggressive schedule, you have to be careful that you don’t build something that you don’t have to tear out later,” he said.
Among the latest work being done is hoisting some of the stadiums’ 47 elevators into position. The overall project is about 15 percent complete.
Construction leaders estimate the stadium will be ready by the 2014 season. The project’s general superintendant said construction workers are on site nearly 20 hours a day erecting steel and welding.
