Annual Elk Grove Fitness Competition Attracts All Ages

ELK GROVE (CBS13) - The 3rd Annual Fittest of Elk Grove competition showcased athletes from all walks of life.

The did everything from squats to burpees, and even your basic sit ups.

"Moving forward is beating yourself everyday to become better and better," said Charlie Zamora, owner of a CrossFit gym in Elk Grove.

It's a place where age really is just a number.

"It feels good to know that I'm here with older people competing with them," said Liuliana Higuera.

Higuera was the youngest competitor at just 13 years old.

At the competition, athletes were as young as 13 and as old as 65. Even families stepped up together.

"We have a lot of couples competing out here," event director Brian Detrick said. "There are a lot of individuals. Two are in the 50 plus category and a mother in 35 and up, and her sons in the 17 and under."

The local competition can result in national recognition, taking fitness to a whole different level.

"It's one of those things you have to try to block out the pain because it works your entire body. You have to have the endurance core; you have to be mentally strong as well," one athlete.

Many of the athletes have broken out of their comfort zones by leaving the traditional gym for bigger rewards.

"Routine is monotonous, sometimes you do the same thing and shows up, you're not getting the results. It's kind of like a rat in a wheel," said Zamora.

These workouts are different.

"We have CrossFit, barbell, power lifting, kids' programs, we train anyone at any level. There are no machines that are used, so every night you're learning something new," said Zamora.

It's making fitness fun and getting results with some of the top athletes in the world competing in this competition.
