DIXON (CBS13) – Dixon’s plans to build a movie studio, which could bring in nearly $1 billion in revenue, could be in jeopardy.
The backers of the proposed studio say a measure on Tuesday’s ballot could sink the project.
Known for its quaint, small town charm, Dixon is now the unlikely place picked to become a virtual Hollywood of Northern California.
However, it seems that politics are now standing in the way. In this case, it’s called Measure N.
“Measure N is an open government initiative,” said Dave Scholl, Yes on N.
Scholl modeled the measure after laws in San Francisco, Hayward and Gilroy. He says it’s built on government transparency and allowing public access to records.
But the CEO for Morning View Studios says if Measure N passes, it’s unlikely they’ll come to town.
“If the people of Dixon read this thing thoroughly, I think they would understand that they’re the ones being held hostage,” said Carissa Carpenter.
She believes the measure could force them to release financial documents and even details of security measures with movie stars working in the studios.
“The way that this law is written, everything and anything the city deems appropriate to share with the public, they can,” said Carpenter.
Scholl says that’s simply not true.
“There is a specific state law that protects trade secrets, the financial records, the marketing plans, all of that,” said Scholl.
So with just days until the election, this screenplay may not have a happy ending after all.
If the measure fails and Morning View moves forward, the next step is for the studio to purchase the land. The construction work alone could bring 1,000 jobs to the area.
