1-Year-Old Girl Shot In Alleged Drive-By In Modesto

MODESTO (CBS13) - A 1-year-old girl is battling to stay alive after being shot.

Police have roped off the home with crime tape, but they still aren't sure if that's where the little girl was shot.

Modesto police aren't saying how it happened, or if they even know at this point.

Just after noon, police say someone dropped off the little girl at a local hospital with at least one gunshot wound.

"We believe she was brought in by some sort of private transport, some sort of private car," one officer said.

Police say the driver told them that the toddler was shot during a drive-by shooting at a home off Stone Leaf Court, but when they arrived at the home, it still wasn't clear what really happened.

"We did receive preliminary information that a drive-by shooting occurred, but we don't have any information to substantiate that a drive-by occurred here," said Sgt. Brian Findlen, Modesto Police Department.

While they have not made any arrests, police questioned family members and did take a man into custody.

Many neighbors say they didn't hear or see anything suspicious. However, they say this area is no stranger to violence.

"Too much gangs, people getting shot, robberies, too much drugs," said neighbor Oyuku Avalos.

Meanwhile, police still won't say if that home is where that little girl lives. She is in critical condition but stable at Oakland Children's Hospital.

Police are not saying much about the case because they want to protect the identity of the child.
