Coroner IDs Father And Son Swept By Wave Into San Francisco Bay

SAUSALITO (CBS / AP) — The Marin County Coroner's Office released the names of a father and son who died after they were swept into the sea while fishing near the Golden Gate Bridge Friday. Another man, who was with the victims, survived.

Marin County sheriff's officials say 37-year-old Juan Escamillo-Rojas and nine-year-old Juan Carlos Escamillo-Monroy, both of San Francisco, died after waves pulled them into the frigid waters around 5 p.m. Friday.

The pair was fishing on a rocky coastline just northwest of the bridge on the Marin Headlands, an area exposed to large swells rolling in from the Pacific.

After getting thrashed by the waves, the surviving fisherman managed to make it back to shore and flag down bystanders, who called 911.

The father and son were plucked from the water about 100 yards offshore by a Tiburon Fire Department boat, with a Coast Guard helicopter assisting. Both were pronounced dead after being taken to Coast Guard Station Golden Gate.

The area is part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area.
