Gov. Brown Calls Texas' Efforts To Lure California Businesses 'Barely A Fart'

WEST SACRAMENTO (CBS13) - Gov. Jerry Brown shot back on Tuesday at a Texas radio advertisement campaign trying to lure California businesses, calling it "barely a fart."

"A $26,000 radio buy is the smallest entry into the media market of California," he said during an event promoting green vehicles at a UPS plant in West Sacramento. "And as a fellow who has bought tens of billions of dollars of advertising -- should I liken it to when you stand by the ocean? No. It's a big nothing."

The radio spots airing in Sacramento, Los Angeles, San Francisco and elsewhere across the state feature Texas Gov. Rick Perry saying how hard it is for businesses to operate in California and urging them to relocate to Texas. A new website was also launched to promote the campaign.

Brown dismissed them, saying "it's not a serious story guys. It's not a burp. It's barely a fart."

He said California has always attracted people. "They're coming to California because this is where it is," Brown said. "They're not going to Lubbock or whatever those places are that make up that state. I say, come on!"

In fact, Brown questioned why anyone would want to leave California for Texas. Quite the opposite, he said.

"A lot of these Texans are coming and they don't go back," the governor said. "Who'd want to spend their summers in 110 degree heat, inside some kind of a fossil-fueled air conditioner? Not a smart way to go!"

The governor did admit there are issues with doing business in California, but it's something his administration is working on with regulatory reform on his agenda.
