Man Shot To Death, Teen Girl Stabbed In Modesto Gang Fight

MODESTO (CBS13) - A 20-year-old man was killed in a Modesto gang shooting Thursday night and a 17-year-old girl was stabbed, likely during the same altercation, police said Friday.

Officers responded to the 2400 block of Vera Cruz Drive at about 8:38 p.m. and found the male victim suffering from several gunshot wounds. Officers performed CPR until paramedics arrived, but the man, whose name wasn't released, died at the hospital.

Police say the man was walking on Vera Cruz Drive when he was confronted by a group of people in several vehicles. The verbal confrontation quickly turned physical and he was shot multiple times.

As officers were on scene there, police received a report of a 17-year-old girl who had arrived at a local hospital suffering from critical stab wounds. Investigators believe the two incidents are related and are trying to determine how the stabbing occurred. The stabbing victim underwent emergency surgery and was listed in stable condition Friday.

Homicide and gang investigators worked throughout the night, but no arrests had been made as of early Friday afternoon.

"Because we have several individuals involved who are gang members or gang-affiliated, it makes this case challenging to work through. It will take some time, but we are confident we will come to a resolution," said Investigative Services Sgt. Ivan Valencia. "We know what happened, which is that a male was shot and a female was stabbed. Our job now is to gather the evidence, which should tell us how it occurred, why it occurred and who should be held criminally culpable."

Anyone with information on this case is asked to call Detective Robert Gumm at (209) 342-9162 or Crime Stoppers at (209) 521-4636. Callers to Crime Stoppers can remain anonymous and may be eligible for a cash reward. Tipsters can also text information to Crime Stoppers by sending a text message to 274637. Type "TIP704" along with your message.
