BERLKELEY, Calif. (AP) — Fire has damaged an eating area in the front of the famed Chez Panisse restaurant in Berkeley.
Berkeley Fire Department Deputy Chief Avery Webb says that a small dining area in the front of the restaurant burned during the overnight blaze, but the bulk of the restaurant was not damaged.
Webb says it appears the fire started in a sub-floor area of the building but he says a cause is under investigation.
The restaurant was founded by Alice Waters and boasts of its relationships with local farmers.
Gourmet Magazine named it the best restaurant in America in 2001 and from 2002 to 2008, it was one of Restaurant Magazine’s 50 best restaurants in the world.
