47-Year-Old Woman Fatally Hit By Light Rail In Rancho Cordova

RANCHO CORDOVA (CBS13) - A pedestrian was fatally hit by a light rail train in Rancho Cordova Monday morning.

"It's not fun, start the shift in the morning and definitely not something you want to see," said Rancho Cordova Sgt. Reed Harris.

Officials say the 47-year-old woman -- reportedly walking her bicycle around crossing arms that were down -- was hit near Folsom Boulevard and Mercantile Drive. Investigators are still trying to figure out why the woman was on or near the tracks at the time of the accident.

"It's hard because you know the gates are down, the bells are going. You have to wonder what are they're thinking. Why did they take that risk to cross without, there could be a train coming and there was," said Sacramento Regional Transit District spokesperson Devra Selenis said.

RT says it's been seeing many reports like this lately.

"There have been quite a few in the last year, and most of those have occurred because people were not paying attention," said Selenis. 6 sec

Regional Transit had buses transporting commuters between the Hazel Avenue and Sunrise Boulevard stations.

The victim's identity has not been released at this time.

Police say they don't know how fast the train was going, and if alcohol or drugs played a role in this accident.
