SACRAMENTO (CBS13) – A handcuffed inmate was quickly caught after escaping from the Sacramento County Jail Wednesday afternoon, police say.
“I describe it as ill-advised. I mean, we’re talking about 5 o’clock in downtown Sacramento and he’s wearing handcuffs,” said Sacramento County Sheriff’s Department spokesperson Sgt. Jason Ramos.
Leonid Fedorchuk, 19, was arrested on a felony warrant. Police say he was inside the jail garage with other inmates getting off a transport van when a sliding door opened and he took off.
“It rolls slowly up. It’s controlled by central control personnel,” said Ramos. “At some point, this door was opened to let a patrol unit exit.”
Sacramento police searched the area with the assistance of the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Department.
Sacramento Police Department spokesperson Officer Michele Gigante said Fedorchuk was captured at a county administration building next door by security guards.
The sheriff’s department says it will be conducting an internal investigation to keep something like this from happening again.
