Truck Shears Off Power Pole At Home Near Dixon

DIXON (CBS13) - A homeowner near Dixon got the scare of a lifetime when a truck hit a power pole, knocking it over into his yard.

"It got my attention. It was kind of scary," said homeowner Ken Mulkins.

Mulkins says got the scare of his life. He heard a loud crash just as he was about to get into the shower.

"It was real loud. I thought he hit the house," he said.

The driver of a pickup truck was driving to Dixon when he hit a patch of gravel, drove over both lanes on Midway and Porter Roads, and sheered a power pole in half, say investigators. The truck went into a ditch and just missed a propane tank.

"He hit that pole just dead center, right in the middle of the grill," said Mulkins. "Had he been off just a little bit, he would have hit the tank and the house."

The accident even affected Amtrak service and freight trains because of drooping lines that shut down one of the nearby tracks.

"It's a dangerous intersection because we have traffic that goes straight through, and then you have the stop sign and with the railroad tracks," said CHP Ofc. Darren Carrington. "There's a lot of things going on in this little intersection at one time."

Carrington says the driver wasn't speeding at the time.

PG&E is expected to replace the pole and restore power at the home today.
