Caltrans Considering 3-Passenger Requirement For Carpool Lanes
SANTA ANA, Calif. (AP) — Drivers who want to use some of California's most crowded carpool lanes may have to track down another passenger to ride with them.
The Orange County Register reports that Caltrans is considering requiring a vehicle have three people in it, not just two, to qualify for the state's most congested carpool lanes.
California is under pressure from the federal government to improve carpool commuting times on its most heavily trafficked highways.
State officials say they are looking at every freeway in California, the Register reported Saturday, but the ones in Orange County are among the worst
Caltrans officials say Orange County's carpool lanes have gotten so congested that not one of them functions during rush hour as a carpool lane is supposed to.
