Little League Parents, Kids Come Together To Decry Violence Following Shooting

VALLEJO (CBS13) - A shooting forced a Vallejo little league to cancel its games. But players and parents refuse to call "you're out" on the season.

This weekend, little league parents and players were outraged over adults behaving badly on Wednesday when a fight that started between two male spectators at a little league park in Vallejo put the games on hold after someone pulled a gun.

"It was a fight that escalated into gunfire," said.

The shot took place a half a block away from the field. No one was hurt, but at least 100 parents, coaches and kids came together Saturday to make it clear violence isn't welcome here.

"Leave the ego at home. Stop projecting yourself onto your kids. I know it's hard to do," said.

The league is enforcing a zero tolerance policy. The taunting, violence and profanity, among other things, are not allowed. Effective immediately, if it happens, the person or persons in the stand will be removed, they promise.

"Just common sense rules that are probably everywhere. And we have to make sure that they remain posted, and that we enforce them vigorously," said Gregory Reason, president of the North Vallejo Little League.

"We're just asking our parents to realize that these are just kids. And the majority of the parents do know that a lot of the things that we're seeing is people bringing their personal problems to the field," said Darren Johnson, a parent volunteer.

They intend to be back on the field Monday and plan to go to the city council meeting to ask for more of a police presence on Tuesday night.

"I want to make sure that I can do everything so my son can get back out there with his teammates," said Johnson.

The North Vallejo Little League is currently in its 49th season. About 200 children play in the league.
