Rep. Pelosi To Deliver Commencement Address To UC Davis Law Students

DAVIS (CBS13) - UC Davis law students will be addressed by Rep. Nancy Pelosi during the commencement address of their May graduation, school officials announced.

"I am delighted that Leader Pelosi has agreed to give the commencement address," said Kevin R. Johnson, dean of UC Davis School of Law.

Leading House Democrats for a decade, Pelosi, D-Calif., currently serves as the House Minority Leader. She is the only woman to serve as speaker of the House from 2007 to 2011. In November 2002, House Democrats elected Pelosi as the first woman to lead a major political party in Congress.

"Our graduates will benefit greatly from hearing her perspective as a groundbreaking leader on the national stage," said Johnson. "I know she will deliver a powerful and inspiring message."

Some of the previous commencement speakers at UC Davis School of Law include Gov. Jerry Brown, former U.S. Attorney General Janet Reno, California Senate President pro Tem Darrell Steinberg, and civil rights leader Coretta Scott King — the widow of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., for whom the law school building is named.

Pelosi will speak to graduates, faculty and guests at the Robert and Margrit Mondavi Center for the Performing Arts on Friday, May 17, at 4 p.m.
