Thieves Leave Trail Of Debris After Downtown Dollar Tree Break-In

SACRAMENTO (CBS13) - Thieves left behind a trail of debris after a break-in at a Dollar Tree Store in downtown Sacramento early Friday morning.

An anonymous person called 911 after seeing the broken glass.

"Can't feel safe anywhere anymore," customer Charlie Barnes said.

Police say two people seen on surveillance video broke into the S Street Dollar Tree around 5 a.m.

"Limited description, male -- black or Hispanic -- probably in there mid to late 20s or 30s, wearing dark clothing," Sacramento police Officer Brent Meyer said of the suspects.

On the sidewalk outside were hair products and batteries left among the shattered glass. Inside the store, an entire aisle was ransacked. Items from the shelves were thrown on the floor; and at one of the checkout stands, boxes of candy bars were stolen.

"That's just sad. This world is just coming, it's just a mess. People are just robbing everything now a days," said Michael Jones, who works across the street.

Police say the two people were inside the store for more than an hour before police arrived. The store has an alarm but police say the alarm company never reported any activity inside the store.

"Who breaks into the Dollar Tree?" said Barnes.

"Why would anybody want to break into a Dollar Store?" said Jones.

People reacting to the break-in were clearly surprised by the news.

"You need 17 shopping carts to spend $5. So it's crazy," said Barnes. "How much merchandise can you carry away from the Dollar Tree?"

Crime scene investigators even came to the scene, taking photos of batteries and the trail that led around the corner towards the light rail tracks.

Despite the break-in, Dollar Tree did open for business. The store cleaned up the sidewalk, and covered up the open window with two shopping carts.
