Local Residents Flock To Cemeteries To Honor Fallen Heroes

Many local residents attended public memorials remembering the men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice this Memorial Day.

Hundreds of people gathered today at the Sacramento Valley National Cemetery in Dixon. Emotions ran high for many as they remembered their love ones who gave their lives in service to our country.

"Not about picnics, it's not about having a good time." "It's about remembering the ones that made it possible for us to live in a free country," said Jesse Branch Sgt. Major, USMC Ret.

The cemetery sits on 500 acres that was donated by a farmer.

In Fair Oaks, a 3/4 size replica of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial wall is on display at Mount Vernon Memorial Park. The names of all of the people killed in the war are engraved on the wall, which stands more than eight feet high and stretches 240 feet long.

Many visitors to the memorial say its presence is humbling.

"I've never been able to go up and touch it or look for names. One lady has been here five times and finally went up and found what she was looking for. It's deep routed. It's hard," said Bob Rogers, Seabees MCBA.

Sacramento is the last stop for this replica wall before it's permanently mounted in Texas.
