Teen Drowns In Sacramento River Near Rio Vista

SOLANO COUNTY (CBS13) - A holiday outing at Sandy Beach in Solano County turned tragic when a teenager drowned in the Sacramento River.

At around 11 a.m. the teen and his friend were swimming at the Sandy Beach boat launch, which is located just south of Rio Vista, when a witness reported seeing one of them go under the water and come back up. The teen then went under a final time and never resurfaced.

Bystanders called 911 and ran to get a park ranger, but by then it was too late. When searchers arrived on the scene, they couldn't find the boy. Searchers brought in ropes and are using them to search the bottom of the river.

A witness walking along the beach saw the teenager struggling and fighting to stay above water.

"He was trying to fight, but the current just took him."

Signs posted at the beach warn against swimming due to strong currents and a sudden drop-off.
